Dave Dictor from the band MDC. Author, Musician, and Activist

Hello, I am Dave Dictor and I have just had my first book about my life come out, “Memoirs from a Damaged Civilization- Stories of Punk Fear and Redemption” on Manic D Press. It is my tale of how I grew into being one of the first in my generation to take on the punk mantle and to start my own punk band. I come from the queer division of punk having come out of the Austin, Texas punk scene which hailed The Big Boys (Randy “Biscuit” Turner) and The Dicks (Gary Floyd) both with very out gay male singers. I was the third in the pack of three there from Austin. Where as the rest of the world had very few queer identified punk singers back in the day,

Austin had three. I was less out because I come from the later identified and discussed “fluid” trans-sexuality where my feelings and disposition continually are in flux. I can date women and totally love women as well as men. I guess they call that bisexuality. I can do drag or cross dress and primp and I can also play sports and sing in a highly charged testosterone driven hardcore punk rock band and still do… I am “fluid”.

Memoir of a damaged civilization, by Dave Dictor

I believe there are many more fluids out there hiding in the straight world because it is convenient and it just is plain tricky to figure out for yourself nethertheless explain it to the rest of the world. That world generally thinks in terms of being able to label things and then store in a box somewhere. So Dave is either a closet drag queen and must be gay or what the fuck is up? I use to like the way Camille Paglia declared that in general people are either gay or straight and there is no in between. That works great for her worldview and maybe her own sexuality but I find it so, not true for me. So you people who are fluid I am one of you and we have each other and thankfully we are accepted under the “queer umbrella” and here we are and it really is time to love ourselves and just be out there. This is confusing to lovers, parents and the public in general but here we are.

I will be talking about this and a range of topics from trans use of bathrooms ( how lame of the scaredy cat straight world) , to the environment to the presidential election to vegan ethics and beyond … please leave a comment or follow me on Facebook, Twitter, and more to speak with me.
